U.S. military marks end to nearly nine bloody years in Iraq

(Reuters) - U.S. forces formally ended their nine-year war in Iraq on Thursday with a low key flag ceremony in Baghdad, while to the north flickering violence highlighted ethnic and sectarian strains threatening the country in years ahead.

"After a lot of blood spilled by Iraqis and Americans, the mission of an Iraq that could govern and secure itself has become real," Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said at the ceremony at Baghdad's still heavily-fortified airport.

Almost 4,500 U.S. soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqis lost their lives in the war that began with a "Shock and Awe" campaign of missiles pounding Baghdad and descended into sectarian strife and a surge in U.S. troop numbers.

U.S. soldiers lowered the flag of American forces in Iraq and slipped it into a camouflage-colored sleeve in a brief outdoor ceremony, symbolically ending the most unpopular U.S. military venture since the Vietnam War of the 1960s and 70s.

And so ends the illegal occupation of a sovereign nation in our quest for oil. I suppose it's a coincidence that the price of gas locally just dipped below $3 for the first time in years, despite the fact that we are in a Depression. What would you have rather done with $800 Billion and hundreds of thousands of dedicated soldiers efforts? Thanks to those who served and hugs to those who lost kin.

_*Congressional Reform Act of 2011*_

1. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office.

2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social
Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the
Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all
Americans do.

4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.
Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

5. Congress loses their current health care system and
participates in the same health care system as the American people.

6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the
American people.

7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women.

Congressmen/women made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive
the message. Don't you think it's time?

This is why I believe that Grover Norquist and his adherents are committing treason. This is why they are so dangerous and must be stopped.The only surprise about the failure of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, or the supercommittee, to agree on any plan to reduce the national debt by $1.2 trillion is that anybody was surprised at all.

Let's be honest. The supercommittee was doomed from the start, and it was a mistake to create it in the first place.

There are those, and I'm one of them, who question its very constitutionality. Where in the Constitution is Congress given the authority to bestow on just 12 of its members plenipotentiary powers to meet in secret and devise a plan for cutting $1.2 trillion out of the budget, which all members of Congress must then vote on, up or down, without the ability to change or amend? Where? Nowhere.

But even if it is constitutional, its prospects for success were nonexistent. The same resistance among Republicans to any increase in revenues existed long before the committee was formed, and weren't about to change because somebody shook pixie dust on the supercommittee.

In the wake of its demise, we hear three theories about the committee. All three of them are false. First is the contention that things would have turned out differently if only President Obama had taken part in the negotiations. Baloney. This was a congressional committee, created by special legislation with 12 members, six representatives and six senators, with a specific mission and a fixed deadline. There was no seat at the table for Obama or any other member of the administration. By law, deciding on a formula for cutting $1.2 trillion from the national debt was the job of Congress alone, and Congress failed to deliver.

The tea party has a message for American businesses: "Stop hiring!"

It wasn't enough to demand that Democrats "Stop talking about jobs."

It wasn't enough to pen an unprecedented letter Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, demanding that the Federal Reserve basically let the economy fail and let America suffer, by keeping unemployment high and keeping the economy lousy through the 2012 election. (The tea party assault on the Fed failed, anyhow. The Fed ignored them.)

It wasn't enough to demand that President Obama park his "ugly bus" and stop promoting his jobs bill (on Republican turf, no less), and calling attention to Republicans' lack of a jobs plan.

They have purposely covered up oil spills, accidents, faulty bookkeeping, and inactive ingredients in pursuit of profit.
They purposefully keep people misinformed and fearful through their control of the media.
They have accepted private contracts to murder prisoners even when presented with serious doubts about their guilt.
They have perpetuated colonialism at home and abroad. They have participated in the torture and murder of innocent civilians overseas.
They continue to create weapons of mass destruction in order to receive government contracts. *

Who will be left standing when all the GOP Candidates skeletons come out of the closet?

Cain served on the board of directors throughout Aquila's ill-fated trading misadventure and the subsequent collapse of the company's retirement fund. In fact, he chaired the board's compensation committee, which, according to the lawsuit, had direct oversight of the push to get employees to invest more and more in Aquila stock. As chair of the compensation committee, Cain also saw fit to dole out $30 million in bonuses, not including stock options, to the top five execs at Aquila in 2002, with the company's stock plummeting. A month after the Kansas City Star reported on the hefty bonuses in July 2002, the company laid off 500 employees, and the losses to employees holding company stock had reached hundreds of millions of dollars.

As a board member, Cain would've had direct knowledge of Aquila's activities, says Fred Taylor Isquith, a New York attorney who litigated the employee class action. Asked if it was fair to place blame on Cain for the debacle at Aquila, Isquith replied, "Yes, I believe it is."

BUFFETT: ...I've got my tax return here.

ROSE: We'll take look at them in a moment.

BUFFETT: And -- and they -- they get -- I get taxed on up to $100,000. And -- and -- and my super rich friends get taxed up to $100,000. And that tax hits the people in my office very, very hard. Often they have a spouse working, so they get taxed on up to $200,000 that payroll tax. And that's at -- this year we've had a waiver of two points but that's normally at 15.3 percent. That alone is higher than the tax rate on capital gains or dividends.

ROSE: You point out that the average tax rate for people in your audience -- in your -- the average rate for people in your office is 36 percent of taxable income.

BUFFETT: Yes, 36 percent. And nobody's below 33 percent. And incidentally, the lowest income person in the office is higher than the 33 percent. They don't have the low rate. So from 33 percent to 41 percent they range and they average 36 percent and I'm in there with a fat 17.4 percent I think it is.

ROSE: And why is that?

BUFFETT: Well, taxes -- if you make money with money, you get taxed very -- at very low rates; 15 percent dividends in capital gains. No payroll tax. If you make money with muscle or hard work or sweat of your brow, you get taxed at rates that move on up. And most of the people, the middle-class gets taxed at rates of either 15 percent or 25 percent on their income tax, but then they get really hit hard on the payroll tax and that's what brings the rates in our office up to an average of 36 percent if you leave me out.
